community here. just so quiet and pristine and you call it because what you can hear about newtown, connecticut, and it is so filled with grief. it is only the beginning, though, as this town prepares to bury those who were killed on friday. there will be so many burials. the first of the funerals begins today at 1:00 p.m. these would beautiful children, jack pinto, noah pozner. it is going to be a tragic several weeks. no one knew that more than president obama who came here to speak to this town at a touching memorial last night. >> surely we do better than this. if there is even one step we can take to save another child or another parent or another town from the grief that'ses have e visited tucson, aurora, oak creek and newtown, communities from columbine to blacksburg before that, surely we have an obligation to try. >> surely we have an obligation to try, as newtown remembers. here are some other tragedies. adam lanza has been identified officially as the killer. that is his mother in better times on the right. nancy lanza. her home remains a crime scene. it will remain so

of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you
. from washington our investigative correspondent live at newtown high school. let me start with you, pete. what's the latest on the investigation and the question that investigators said they will tell us at some point which is how closer are we to knowing why? >> not much that i know of, chuck. they had been hopeful that they could extract some information from the computers that he had in the home. he was very into computers, they say. he was very socially with drawn. he was very engaged with computers. they say before he left his mother's house on the morning that he shot and killed her while she was sleeping, he damaged extensively his computers that he took the hard drive out and tried to tamper with the inside of it and pulled the disk out and did a lot of damage to it. it's not clear whether they will be able to extract information and they will try their best and there is hope they will find something. there was no letter or note left behind. he was not someone who apparently was involved in social media. he didn't post things on websites or chat rooms. there is precious lit

on the ground in newtown, but that there is -- that i think for folks who have wanted to see reform on our nation's gun laws, that this could be an inflexion point. does the mayor share that feeling? >> he hopes so. you know, i may be alone in this, but i am just no longer comforted by comforting words. i feel like as the governor said, you know, we've become very good at doing these memorials after these events and then nothing happens substantively to change the underlying dynamic and the underlying problem, so i'm almost, frankly, a little suspicious of comforting words. comforting words are not nearly muff, and we need action and we need presidential action, presidential leadership. we need congressional action and congressional leadership. mike bloomberg is the head of an organization. mayors all over the country, more than 500. he spent $10 million in the last election to defeat people who had nra support. there are a lot of people in this country who know that it's time for a change. we need to hear all of those voices, and we need leadership in congress and from the white house to
